Wrapping up the award season is the much-anticipated Academy Awards 2016. It’s an exciting time for women in cinema seeing newcomers such as Alicia Vikander, Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronan gain recognition for their stellar performances. These ladies and their fellow nominees delivered serious glitz and glamour, the fashion did not disappoint! Each year, a common trend or color typically dominates the red carpet but not this time; celebrities stepped up their fashion game and took more risks with their choices making it difficult to narrow down our best-dressed list.

Zooming in first on the statuesque beauties dipped in sequins. ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ star Margot Robbie looked like the Oscar statue in her plunging sequined gold Tom Ford gown, while Naomi Watts gave serious Hollywood glamour in her mermaid like strapless gown from Armani Prive. Best Actress Nominee Saoirse Ronan stole the spotlight in a simple yet dazzling emerald green plunging neck gown by Calvin Klein.

There are also some noteworthy celebrities that forwent the big ball gown for a more simplistic route on the red carpet. Dior spokesperson Charlize Theron commanded attention in a plunging fiery red gown from the fashion house. Best Supporting Actress Nominee Rachel McAdams fashion risk completely paid in her emerald green backless slip dress with thigh-high slit by up-and-coming designer August Getty. Wearing a simple bold tangerine color gown, Olivia Munn looked stunning in Stella McCartney. The actress kept everything else simple including her jewelry and hair and makeup.

It wouldn’t be the Oscars without the haute couture creations on the red carpet and who better showcase them but none other than the nominees themselves. Leading in this category is Best Actress Nominee Cate Blanchett who looked ethereal in her custom-made sea foam green Armani Prive gown. The gown features a floral cap sleeves clusters, a structured bodice and mini train. Her ‘Carol’ co-star and fellow nominee Rooney Mara walked the red carpet in her gothic signature look in a sheer white long-sleeves dreamy gothic creation by Givenchy featuring a diamond hole detail on the stomach. Brie Larson was definitely the princess of the night in her custom-made Gucci creation with cascading ruffles skirt and crystal encrusted wide belt. She accessorized her look with an Oscar statue for Best Actress for her performance in ‘Room’.

Last but definitely not the least on our Oscar best-dressed list are the stars that took major fashion risks on the red carpet. Lady Gaga turned heads not her outlandish look this time, but for her Hollywood glam look in a custom Brandon Maxwell white jumpsuit with an architectural strapless neckline and a ball gown train. We know that Jennifer Lawrence will be walking the red carpet in Dior but she looked completely different in smoldering lingerie inspired gown with a lace tiered skirt. Saving an honorary mention for the best fashion risk of the night definitely goes to Alicia Vikander in Disney inspired yellow gown by Louis Vuitton. The custom-made creation looked like a modern-day version of Belle’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ gown, which features a bubble mullet hemline and crystal embellishment. Her fashion risk paid off as she took home an Oscar statue that night for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in ‘Danish Girl’.

We’d love to know- who made your Oscars best-dressed list?
