PUBLISHED MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2016
I often get asked about the fashion scene in Qatar and my answer is always ‘It’s slowly gaining more attention but there’s still a long way to go”. While the fashion landscape in the country is still in its infancy, there is a Qatari label that is changing the course of fashion in the country by cultivating a brand that is truly local with an international appeal.
The Kayys is a Qatari label launched in 2011 by sisters Ghada, Hend and Maha Al Subaey. The label immediately gained recognition for their fresh approach and they’re attention to quality and detail. Season after season, the sister trio continuously push themselves in building their brand focused on wearable quality pieces. Their Spring 2016 collection has an obvious emphasis on material and masterfully cut silhouette and clean lines.
“Organic Lines”, The Kayys once again looks into the Middle East for inspiration for their SS16 collection. Entitled “Organic Lines”, is inspired by their travels to the Middle East and the desire to capture the romantic spirit of the Arab world in fashion form. The collection echoes the clean and abstract lines of the desert landscape and introduced prints in mustard yellow and teal that’s a modern interpretation the mineral formation on the sand dunes. The rest of the color palette is subtle and neutral, so as the silhouettes.
Each season, The Kayys are driving their collection towards ready-to-wear. Their SS16 collection delivered sophisticated wearable pieces of bell-bottom cropped pants, tunic dresses paired with wide-leg pants, long-vests and coordinated separates. There’s a nod to sportswear again this season with their signature bomber jacket and knotted skirt and hooded dresses.
